A week ago, I had this horrible, awful, most uncomfortable pain down my right buttocks and down my leg.  It got to a point of being pretty debilitating.  The worst pain was when I tried to go from a sitting to a standing position and vice versa.  It took me a good 15 seconds to be able to stand up or get into a comfortable seated position.

I did a little self-diagnosis and determined that it was clearly sciatica. (<~by the way, I dont necessarily recommend self-diagnosis…go see your doctor if you have pain somewhere).  The pain started on a Tuesday and by the following Monday if was completely gone.  Oddly enough, I was giving it until Monday and then I was going to go to the doctor.  A few things I learned and that seemed to work(and not work) for me:

- Sciatica is the pain when the sciatic nerve is pinched somehow.  Its a sharp pain down your buttocks(generally only on one side) and you can feel it down your leg and sometimes into your foot.

- The reason for the pinched nerve is different for everyone.  Ive heard of pregnant woman having sciatica when the baby is hitting that nerve, others have herniated disks, etc.  Obviously, it is your best interest to talk to your doctor about the root cause of your sciatica pain.

- My pain started on Tuesday and then I did a really grueling leg workout the next day.  Not smart!  Everything in my legs & back were sore & tight from my workout and then I had sciatica pain on top of that.  Stupid move Kirsten!  I did not want to skip my last workout that week, so on Thursday, I went to the gym and worked my back. Again, s.t.u.p.i.d!!

- Its a good idea to get up and move if you have sciatica pain.  All you want to do is lay down(which I did all day on that Saturday) but its actually a good thing to get up and walk.  On Sunday, I went shopping and ran errands so I did a lot of walking.

- Make sure you have good lumbar support.  My desk at work and our living room furniture isnt super supportive so I started using a rolled up towel behind me to give me a little more support.  I found that my U shaped airplane pillow was a fairly good lumbar support.  I also added a small pillow to my car to support my back when Im driving.

- I did a lot of stretching and I continue to do these stretches on a daily basis.  Im spending more time stretching after I workout as well.

- I used heat on the area, which worked for me.  Ive also heard that alternating between ice and heat is a good idea.

- I took Ibuprofen a few times but found that it was not really too effective for me.

I havent had pain since.  Yay!  Again, as I stated above, the cause of sciatica is different for everyone.  If you have pain, go to the doctor.  I just wanted to share my experience and illustrate that its important for all of us to listen to our bodies.
