Orangutan Halloween

Candy and Orangutans, what could be better? While it sounds like a bizarre combination, the two are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the greatest threat facing wild orangutans today is deforestation due to the palm oil industry. Palm oil is used in many industries including steel production, cosmetics, soaps, biodiesels, candles, and thousands of food products – including candy.

While a growing number of palm oil companies choose to use sustainable practices, many and more are still focused on the bottom line. Instead of using readily available degraded land for plantations, these unsustainable companies are logging the rainforests for timber profits or using uncontrolled burning to clear land, resulting in the deaths of thousands of orangutans.

You as a consumer have the power make a difference. Many companies have joined the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil and are committed to purchasing sustainably grown palm oil and the numbers continue to grow. A few years ago your sustainable Halloween candy choices were limited to companies like Nestle and Wonka, but today the ranks have swelled to include Hershey’s, Mars, Ghirardelli, and Lindt as well. With so many options it’s easy to use your consumer dollars to green your Halloween and support orangutans.
